Trumann sales tax increase passes

TRUMANN, AR (KAIT) - Trumann voters passed a proposed one-cent sales tax during a special election Tuesday night.

According to Mayor Barbara Lewallen, the proposed increase passed with a 376-312 vote.

The money raised through the new tax will go into general funding and be used for several things in the city.

The fire department will use some of the money to buy a new ladder truck.

The current one is 45 years old and requires constant maintenance, according to Trumann Fire Chief Revis Kemper.

The city also hopes to improve its ISO fire rating from a 4 to a 3.

Kemper said the tax increase will allow his department to increase manpower.
