JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A special fair hopes to help Region 8 seniors stay healthy.
The St. Bernards Senior Services Fair is Thursday, Sept. 15, from 7 to 10 a.m. at the St. Bernards Auditorium, 505 East Washington Ave. in Jonesboro.
Karan Summit, St. Bernards health educator, appeared on Region 8 News Midday Wednesday.
She encouraged all seniors to come take advantage of the health screenings available.
"If seniors want the most accurate reading, come fasting," Summit said. "We promise to have a few snacks for you after it's over with."
Screenings offered include blood glucose, cholesterol panels, and a bone density test.
There are also some screenings available for a small fee including full lipid panels and hemoglobin.
Along with screenings, seniors can listen to three speakers.
Summit said Cynthia Abel, UAMS Center on Aging, will speak about extra help programs.
"For the seniors in our area that find it very hard to afford some of their medications and do the premiums for their co-pays, she will talk about the extra help programs that are available for seniors," Summit said.
Other speakers include Joanne Woodward, registered nurse, discussing bones and joints; and Dr. Thomas Mulligan, geriatrician, touching on successful aging.
Summit said seniors have a lot to gain by attending the fair.
"The screening is really preventative measures," Summit said. "So many things can happen as we age. High blood pressure, high cholesterol can be what they call silent killers."
There will also be door prizes at the event.
