ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Harding volleyball team defeated Henderson State 3-1 (25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 26-24) on Tuesday to open Great American Conference action. The Lady Bisons improve their conference opener series to 19-1.
Harding improves to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the GAC. Henderson State falls to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in the GAC
SET ONE HIGHLIGHTS
Harding took a comfortable 19-12 lead midway through the first set. Henderson State battled back but couldn't overcome the Lady Bisons lead as Harding won the set 25-22.
SET TWO HIGHLIGHTS
Harding jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open the second set but Henderson State rattled off five points to tie the set at six. It stayed close until Harding took a 24-21 lead off a Henderson State attack error. The Reddies scored the next three points to tie the set and then after a Harding point, scored the next three to win the set 27-25.
SET THREE HIGHLIGHTS
Harding took a 16-10 lead in the third set until Henderson State pulled within three on a 3-0 run led by two kills. After exchanging points, the Lady Bisons took a 23-18 lead on two straight kills. After a Reddie point, Harding had two straight kills to win the set 25-19.
SET FOUR HIGHLIGHTS
Henderson State took a 9-5 lead early in the fourth set until Harding went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-9 lead. With the set tied at 21, the Lady Bisons scored three straight points to lead 24-21. The Reddies tied the match at 24 after scoring the next three points. Harding got two straight blocks to win the set 26-24 and the match.
With the win, Harding has won its last seven straight dating back to Sept 3.
Harding had 60 kills and hit .233. The Lady Bisons had three players finish in double-figure kills and double-figure digs.
Henderson State had 54 kills and hit .168. Harding forced 27 Reddie attack errors.
The Reddies were led by Sharon Tukuaoga who had 17 kills. Courtney Bolf captured a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Sydney Skelton led the Henderson State defense with 21 digs.
Harding Head Coach Meredith Fear: "We played a well-balanced match both offensively and defensively. The team knew the game plan and stuck to it. Henderson State is a very talented team. We kept our cool when the match got close and finished out against a tough team on the road. I'm very proud of how we played tonight."
