BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) -

Batesville police say no foul play is suspected in the death of an infant.

Detective Mike Mundy says early reports show the infant died due to asphyxiation. He adds no foul play is suspected at this time.

Further testing is being done to see if chemicals in the home were the cause, according to the detective.

Batesville Police Chief Alan Cockrill told Region 8 News his officers responded to a call on the morning of Sept. 20 to an infant not breathing.

Officers immediately began CPR and used an AED (automated defibrillator) in an attempt to save the child.

An ambulance took the baby to White River Medical Center while officers continued to assist with CPR, Cockrill said.

Medical personnel treated the infant but were unable to revive the child.

The baby’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Little Rock to determine the cause of death.
