Arkansas' 188th Fighter Wing Heading For Mid-East and European Deployment

MAY 9, 2005 - Posted at 7:44 a.m. CDT

FORT SMITH, AR - The commander of the Air National Guard unit based at the Fort Smith airport, the 188th Fighter Wing, heads out today for deployment, along with about 15 advance personnel.  Colonel J.R. Dallas, the wing commander, and his staff will be preparing the way for a deployment of most of the unit overseas over the next several weeks.

Elements of the 188th will be deployed to locations in Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Spain and elsewhere in Europe.  A handful of 188th members were deployed earlier this year.

The guard members will be gone anywhere from 45 days to 120 days.

The deployment is part of the Air Force's Air Expeditionary Force Rotation that's been in place since the Gulf War.  The 188th will rotate with two other guard units out of Minnesota and Texas.
