Two Region 8 teachers will head to Little Rock Wednesday as finalists for the Arkansas Department of Education’s 2017 Arkansas Teacher of the Year.

Among the 14 Arkansas teachers selected as finalists are Jennifer Andrews, a Walnut Ridge Elementary 4th-grade math and science teacher, and Adriane Duke, who teaches 8th- and 9th-grade math at Annie Camp Junior High School.

Walnut Ridge Elementary Principal Lee Ann Cheadle said Andrews is the first finalist for the school during her time as principal.

“We’re very proud of her,” Cheadle said. “She’s a teacher that makes learning personal and tries to adjust her learning environment to meet the need of the student and go the extra mile if need be. That’s what makes a good teacher.”

According to the Arkansas Department of Education, 4 semi-finalists will be announced at an event at the state capitol.

Public school districts in Arkansas can nominate one teacher for Arkansas Teacher of the Year and an Arkansas Department of Education panel chooses 16 regional finalists.
