POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) -

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department will demolish the main span of the old U.S. Highway 67 bridge in Pocahontas on Sunday.

According to a news release, AHTD will use explosives to bring it down.

AHTD will shut down Highway 67 between Old County Road and U. S. Highway 62 around 7:15 a.m. Sunday. That will allow the contractor to set up a clear zone for the demolition.

They plan is to set up the explosives to bring down the bridge around 7:30 a.m.

After the explosion, Highway 67 will be reopened. AHTD says the highway should be closed for 15 to 30 minutes.

Brad Smithee with AHTD wants the public to stay at home. Smithee said the public will not be able to anything. He said only a boom will be heard and maybe a plume of smoke.

Barriers will be placed 1,000 ft. from the demolition site and if anyone crosses those barriers, preparations will start over.
