Fugitive wanted for 11 years arrested in Hayti

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A fugitive who has been on the run for 11 years was captured in Region 8 Friday.

According to a press release from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, a man known as Joe Anthony Mercado Ortiz, which is not his real identity, was arrested in Hayti.

In November 2005, detectives with the Springfield Police Department arrested this man and charged him with four counts of child rape and five counts of aggravated sexual battery.

Ortiz was arrested Nov. 15, 2005, and was released after posting a $125,000 bond

One week later, Ortiz did not appear in court at his appointed time and a warrant for failure to appear was issued for him.

On Sept. 27, 2016, coordinated efforts by Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agents, intelligence analysts with the TBI and FBI, the Springfield Police Department, the Robertson County Sheriff's Office and the TBI and Nashville's FBI Violent Crimes Task Force got information that the man known as Ortiz may be in Missouri.

Agents went to Missouri and worked with local authorities to find out that Ortiz may be in Hayti with a woman who police believe fled from Tennessee with him in 2005.

On Friday, officers with the Hayti Police Department found and arrested Ortiz at the Budget Inn, 941 State Highway J.

The man's real identity is still unknown, but officers were able to identify him based on tattoos he had at the time of his previous arrest.

He was booked in the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Office, awaiting extradition to Tennessee.
