Barricade situation at prison ends peacefully

DERMOTT, AR (KAIT) - A barricade situation at an Arkansas prison ended peacefully Saturday evening.

An Arkansas Department of Correction official confirmed to Little Rock station KARK that ADC and Arkansas State Police responded to a barricade situation at the Dermott facility Saturday.

Their reporter on the scene said there was a large police presence near the Delta Regional Correctional Unit.

The Chicot County Sheriff Ronald Nichols, said an armed guard refused leave to his tower. The guard, identified by police as 24-year-old Devonte McCarter of Greenville, Mississippi, was armed with a rifle.

The guard did come out of the tower peacefully after speaking with an Arkansas State Police negotiator. No shots were fired in the incident and nobody was injured.

Sheriff Nichols did not know of any requests made by McCarter.

According to a press release from the Arkansas State Police, McCarter was taken to the Drew County Jail and is charged with commercial burglary.
