LITTLE ROCK, AR (KAIT) - A Texas man pleaded guilty to wire fraud in a "scheme" that took money that was intended to feed hungry children, a release from the U.S. Department of Justice stated.
Waymon D. Weeams, 35, of Dallas, pleaded guilty to conspiring to steal money intended to feed children in low-income areas.
According to the release, Weeams sponsored the SJ&B Outreach Program, which operated feeding sites in Wynne, Forrest City and Marianna.
"Between all three sites, he (Weeams) claimed as many as 872 children were fed each day," the release stated. "No children were ever actually fed at the Forrest City site, and Weeams now says that approximately 10 to 50 children were fed at the other two sites."
SJ&B Outreach Program received more than $695,000 in funds intended to feed children in need.
