CROSS COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - A Cross County football coach was asked to resign after a Tuesday night meeting discussing his termination.
Coach Steve Williams was placed on leave after he changed the junior high football schedule so he could see his son play on Thursday nights.
Superintendent Carolyn Wilson requested Williams be fired after he switched the schedule without her approval.
During a hearing, Williams said that over the years, he has talked to several coaches about switching their junior high games to Tuesday night.
That would free up Thursday nights and give him a chance to watch his son play junior high football at Wynne.
Wilson asked Williams to change it back because she did not know it was happening.
She felt it created a mess for parents.
Wilson asked Williams to write a letter explaining the change.
The schedule was changed back and Williams was served a termination letter.
Football players at the meeting felt the termination was unnecessary.
"I do feel like it is a little much," said Joshua Harvey. "I think it takes a real serious thing for your job to be terminated. I believe you either had to break a law or have blatant insubordination for your job to be terminated. Nobody deserves to be fired for something as small as this."
Witnesses spoke on behalf of Williams and Wilson.
Williams will be paid out the rest of his contract and will not be allowed to participate in any athletics events at the school other than being a spectator.
