Arkansas Gets Poor Marks for Treatment of Rural Students

MAY 11, 2005 - Posted at 4:51 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A national advocacy group for rural schools that lobbied against school consolidation in Arkansas last year gives the state a low ranking for its treatment of rural students.

The Washington-based Rural School and Community Trust says the state scored low because of inadequate spending on rural schools and poor graduation rates.  The study ranked Arkansas seventh nationally in failing to meet the needs of rural students.  Southern states and New Mexico topped the list.

The study reviewed data from before Arkansas adopted major education reforms this year.  State Education Director Ken James says the reforms should make a difference.  James says Arkansas has not turned its back on rural schools and is committed to helping students in all areas of the state.
