STEELE, MO (KAIT) - An elderly man was the victim of a strong-arm robbery after police say a group of men "enticed" him to play a card game.
The 76-year-old victim told Steele police he was pumping gas Thursday at the Deerfield Travel Center, U.S. Highway 61, when a man approached him and said another man was in the back parking lot giving away money.
The victim, according to Chief Billy Joe Stanfield, went to the back parking lot where several men approached him.
"One of the men enticed the victim to play a card game, telling the victim it would cost him $100 to play," Stanfield said.
When the victim took out his wallet, one of the suspects grabbed it, stealing a "substantial amount of money."
The group of men then walked away.
Stanfield said a similar incident occurred earlier in the day at a location in Matthews, MO, in New Madrid County.
The chief encourages anyone with information on either crime to call the Steele Police Department at 573-695-3411.
