NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) -

The city of Newport is currently working to create a Metropolitan Port Authority.

According to Newport Executive Director for Economic Development Jon Chadwell, the city is working to develop a port authority on the White River.

“We believe that river transportation is a viable option, and it is one of the cheapest ways to transport goods," Chadwell said. "It just gives us another infrastructure and advantage when we’re recruiting industry."

He said communities all along the White River area have been pushing for better navigation for many years. Now, it's time to convince others.

"We just want the federal agencies to see that we're serious and that we believe White River navigation is important," Chadwell said.

Chadwell added if the city can show that people are interested in using the port authority, then he believes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin dredging the river.
