MARKED TREE (KAIT) - The Marked Tree community gathered Saturday night to remember two victims who died in a house fire.

Joseph Wilson Jr., 3, and his great-grandmother Laura Manness, 76, died when their home on Brigance Avenue went up in flames early Monday.

The service included readings of scripture and the congregation lighting candles and singing "Jesus Loves Me" in honor of Joseph.

Several people spoke at the service, including a firefighter who was on the scene the night of the deadly fire.

"It was a tragedy from the beginning, that's all I can say," said Steven Griffin, a Marked Tree firefighter. "We will heal from this but we will never forget."

The family's pastor also shared fond memories of the toddler and Manness.

"Miss Laura was one of the sweetest ladies," said Pastor Dale Noe. "It hurts, but we know she's in a much better place. As for baby Joseph, the same thing. We're hurting but we trust in Jesus and we know, we know that he's in control."

At the end of the service, the crowd prayed and released lanterns in the victims' memory.
