Officers searching for wallet thief

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A woman told police Tuesday that someone stole her wallet with $700 in cash inside while her back was turned.

Officers went to the Hays on East Nettleton Avenue around 8 a.m. Tuesday about the theft. The woman said it happened as she was shopping in the store with her children.

In addition to the money taken, the suspect took the woman's driver's license, insurance card, each of her children's Social Security cards, and her debit cards.

Officer Zach Kaja reviewed the store's security video. On the video, the suspect, a black man that looks to be around 18 to 25 years old, was seen following the woman as she went through the store.

"I then watched as she made her way to the registers with the wallet still in the top of the basket," Kaja said in the report. "During her walk to the register, the black male is right behind her and then passes for a brief moment while she turns to a register."

As the woman was unloading her groceries, the man returned and stood very close to the handle part of the basket, according to the report.

The suspect stood there for a moment but soon left with something in his left hand. The man was then seen lifting his shirt and putting the item in his pants.

Anyone with information on the theft can call Jonesboro Crimestoppers at 935-STOP.
