POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KAIT) -

John J. Pershing VA Medical Center will join dozens of other Poplar Bluff businesses and organizations this month to help the homeless and low-income individuals and families.

The seventh annual Community Outreach Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at the Black River Coliseum, 301 S. 5th St.

In addition to housing, employment, and educational resources, participants will also receive health care services and screenings, clothing, food, and personal care services. Utility assistance applications will also be available.

"The immediate goal of the Community Outreach Event is to be a 'one-day, one-stop shop' providing services and resources to people who are in need," said Jennifer Lay, VA homeless coordinator.

For the medical center, the event functions as a "stand down" to benefit homeless veterans. Since 1988, the VA medical center has hosted or co-hosted numerous stand-down events.

More than 50 local agencies and businesses will be on hand for the event. Organizations that would like to participate should contact Lay at 573-778-4425 or Amy Helm at 573-778-4439.

All citizens in Butler County who are homeless or low-income are invited to attend the free event.
