A-State in Contention After First Day of Lady Red Wolves Classic

JONESBORO, Ark. (5/17/16) – The Arkansas State women's golf team shot a combined 611 Monday at Sage Meadows County Club, completing the Lady Red Wolves Classic's first two rounds in second place.

UTEP leads the tournament after turning in a two-round total of 592. Little Rock stands in third place with a total of 613, followed by Arkansas State (B) at 615, Belmont (617), William Woods (622), UT Rio Grande Valley (316) and Quincy (681).

A-State found itself in a tie for fifth after carding a 308 in the first round after battling through wind gusts of 35 mph throughout the day. The team bounced back in the second round and turned a 303 to earn pickup five strokes on the Miners, who turned in two sub-300 rounds on the day.

Arkansas State was led by junior Kirsten Garner, who will enter Tuesday's final round in a tie for third place. The Hot Springs, Ark., native turned a round of 1-under-par 71 in the second and stands at five-over for the tournament. Marisa Marquez, who has competed in each of the Red Wolves events this season, carded a two-round total of sever-over 151, as did sophomore Beth Ann Compton. Sophomore Aracelly Jimenez Rios is one shot behind with eight-over-par 158.

UTEP's Lily Downs leads the event after turning in back-to-back rounds of 1-under-par 71, which was tied for the low round of the tournament with A-State's Garner. The pair were the only players to complete under-par rounds on the day.

The third and final round of the Lady Red Wolves Classic is slated for a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. at Sage Meadows Country Club in Jonesboro, Ark., Tuesday morning.
