JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro police have identified a trucker seriously injured after a car struck him.
Lamar Sanders, 55, of New Albany, MS was northbound on Harrisburg Road near Fernwood Drive when the 2014 Freightliner he was driving for Marten Transport encountered mechanical difficulties around 1 a.m. Tuesday.
A 27-year-old woman traveling southbound struck Sanders when she said he walked in front of her 2009 Dodge Caliber, according to the initial incident report.
After impact, the woman said Sanders seemed to "slide around the front of her vehicle from the passenger's side to the driver's side."
Officer Christopher Pigg noted in his report a small amount of damage to the passenger's side of the car. However, he stated there was a large amount of damage to the driver's side and driver's side mirror.
When Pigg arrived at the scene, he found Sanders on the ground, suffering from head trauma and "gasping for air."
An ambulance crew took Sanders to Central Baptist Church to meet a medical helicopter. He was airlifted to an undisclosed hospital.
Due to the severity of his injuries, two officers escorted the car's driver to a local hospital where she consented to a blood test.
While clearing the scene, Pigg reported finding a red air brake line on the ground next to the cab of Sander's truck. The report stated it had been disconnected from the trailer.
