Arkansas Legislature Formally Adjourns Today

MAY 13, 2005 - Posted at 4:11 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Arkansas Legislature formally adjourned today, a month after legislators ended the 94-day regular session and went home.  House and Senate leaders ended the session with confidence, despite legal threats from dozens of school districts.

The districts want the state Supreme Court to force them to reconsider funding priorities made this year.  Senate leader Jim Argue, a Little Rock Democrat, says he believes the high court, after a hearing next week, will agree with actions taken by the Legislature.

Governor Mike Huckabee has suggested calling a special session to approve a major highway program.  But Argue and House leader Bill Stovall, a Quitman Democrat, say legislators and Huckabee must first decide how they will fund the program.
