SALEM, AR (KAIT) -

A local power cooperative is hoping to do more than turn the lights on in their customer's homes.

The Northeast Arkansas Electric Cooperative announced Thursday the formation of a subsidiary called NEXT.

NEXT, which is powered by the co-op, would provide "broadband internet, television and phone services to a pilot group" inside NAEC's coverage area.

Right now, contractors are installing fiber optic cable in a pilot area which includes certain locations north and west of Salem, south of Mountain Home near Buford, and near Henderson.

If the pilot program is successful, NAEC states, NEXT will create a broadband plan to spread to the rest of the co-op's territory within three to five years.

For more information, go to www.naeci.com/next or call 870-895-3221.

NAEC serves over 36,000 customers throughout seven counties.
