Former judge asks to be released until trial

LITTLE ROCK, AR (KAIT/KARK) - Former Cross County Judge Joseph Boeckmann, 70, requested to be released from jail as he awaits trial.

According to KARK-TV in Little Rock, Boeckmann's lawyer filed a motion Thursday asking he be released to the custody of his sister and brother-in-law in Garland County.

Government attorneys filed a motion on Friday opposing the request, claiming Boeckmann would have access to communicate with the witnesses.

They added that if the motion is granted, they would ask for there to be a no-contact order established so the former judge or a third party would not be able to communicate with any witnesses.

Boeckmann was arrested on Monday on a federal indictment claiming he traded sexual favors for reduced sentences.

The government attorneys asked on Wednesday that Boeckmann be held after allegations he had a third party contact some witnesses and bribe or threaten them.
