JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Hundreds hit the polls Monday for the first day of early voting in Arkansas.
Campaign signs lined the roadway in Jonesboro as hundreds arrived at the Craighead County Election Annex, 315 W. Jefferson Ave., to cast their vote.
Craighead County Clerk Kade Holliday said his office anticipates high voter turnout this election season.
"I'm kind of expecting anywhere from 17,000 to 20,000 are going to come through and early vote. Normally, we see about the same on Election Day," Holliday said.
Holliday said 500 people cast their votes by 11 a.m. Monday.
He expects many to take advantage of early voting during the next two weeks.
"Traditionally about half the total number of people who vote vote early, so I don't see that trend changing this election cycle," Holliday said.
With the large turnout, Holliday said they had done everything they could to make early voting go smoothly.
As of 7 p.m. on Monday, 1,670 people have voted in Craighead County according to Holliday.
Early voting continues all week at the annex from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Craighead County voters can also vote at the courthouse in Lake City.
