Missouri Prepares to Execute Killer Tonight

MAY 17, 2005 - Posted at 10:55 a.m. CDT

BONNE TERRE, MO - Missouri is preparing to carry out its third execution this year at a minute past midnight tonight.

Yesterday, the Missouri Supreme Court refused to intervene on Vernon Brown's behalf.  And unless Governor Blunt or the courts step in, Brown will be executed by injection at the state prison in Bonne Terre.

Brown is sentenced to die in the 1986 killing of nine-year-old Janet Perkins.  Court records indicate Brown enticed the child into his home, then strangled her with a rope.  Police found the child's body in trash bags the next day.

He also was convicted of the 1985 killing of 19-year-old Synetta Ford of St. Louis.
