Clerk's 'error' pays off for lottery winner

NEELYVILLE, MO (KAIT) - A 45-year-old Neelyville man learned mistakes really do pay off.

On a recent Saturday George Hall went to The Junction, 17263 Highway 67 South in his hometown, to buy a lottery ticket.

He intended to buy a specific game, but the clerk made an error.

"I got the wrong ticket," said Hall. "She just grabbed the wrong one, and I said, 'That's okay, I'll take it.'"

Good thing he did.

That clerk's mistake led to Hall walking out of The Junction a whole lot richer than when he walked in.

At first, he didn't believe it when he scratched off one of the $50,000 top prizes on the Missouri Lottery's $3 "10X Crossword" Scratchers ticket. So he verified the win.

"I scanned the ticket myself," Hall told lottery officials. "It said: 'Congrats. You won $50,000'."

He then asked the clerk to scan it. She got the same results.

"I told her I wanted it all in ones," Hall joked.

Because the win happened on Saturday, Hall and his wife had to wait until Monday to claim their prize.

The couple was so excited, they drove to St. Louis on Sunday and checked into a hotel so they could present their winning ticket first thing Monday morning.

"We have a few bills to pay," Hall said. "I've been working 60 hours a week trying to stay on top of things, so this came at a real good time."
