JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - In honor of Veterans Day, a soldier received an award he earned years ago.
Ridgefield Christian School honored local veterans Wednesday.
Congressman Rick Crawford was the guest speaker and presented the Purple Heart to Ray Vance Hoggard.
Hoggard served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968.
He arrived in Vietnam in 1967 as a Combat Medic and was assigned to 1st Air Calvary Division, 1st Brigade, 8th Battalion, Headquarters Company, attached to Company D.
In March of that year, Hoggard was wounded while attending to a fellow soldier with a gunshot wound. Hoggard was treated and transferred to a hospital in Japan.
A misspelling on his original Purple Heart kept him from officially receiving it for nearly 50 years.
Hoggard contacted Congressman Crawford's offices and the matter was resolved leading up to Wednesday's presentation.
During the program, the school choir performed songs for each branch of the military.
Junior Nathaniel Day gave the opening prayer and said it is programs like this that remind everyone what our veterans do for our country.
"How much they do sacrifice, it's something really special that we get to take a part in and really recognize what they've done," Day said. "I think a lot of the time people forget how much they give up to serve. So, I think it's kind of a wakeup call to all of us."
The program concluded with prayer and refreshments for veterans and guests.
