WHITE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

If someone claiming to be with the highway department comes to your home offering to spread gravel, shut the door and call police.

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department says reports of scammers offering to put down gravel in personal driveways is “cause for attention and caution.”

The White County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of individuals driving orange trucks with amber lights marked “Chip Seal Maintenance” with a white AHTD symbol on the doors. They claim to have leftover gravel from construction sites and offer to lay it on a private driveway for a fee.

“By law, the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department cannot perform work on private property,” said Scott Bennett, AHTD director.

AHTD and Arkansas Highway Police encourage citizens to verify credentials when approached by people claiming affiliation with a government organization.

If approached by these individuals, contact local law enforcement immediately.
