"Woodpecker Fever" Sweeping Eastern Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, AR - "Woodpecker Fever" in the Arkansas Delta is making some people do crazy things, such as styling their hair in the form of an ivory-billed woodpecker's crest.

The ivory-billed haircut, the ivory-billed cheeseburger at the local barbeque pit and other items are now offered in the area where the ivory-billed woodpecker was recently found.  And beauty shop owner Penny Childs says the haircuts will be offered at Saturday's Big Woods Birding Festival in Clarendon.

At the same festival, the beauty shop's booth will also feature a four-foot tall plywood woodpecker and tree, with a hole in the tree by the bird's bill where people can stick their heads and take photos.

Some nature conservancy officials knew about the recent discovery of the bird for the first time since 1944, but could not make any preparations for it with the festival until the formal announcement was made.
