JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A Jonesboro man faces a felony aggravated assault charge after police say he chased his roommate of four days with a machete.

The victim told police 28-year-old Chavez Mendez was drunk when he came into the apartment they shared in the 300-block of North Allis Sunday evening.

The man said Mendez, whom he “barely knew,” accused the victim of not respecting him.

When the man tried to explain that he did, Mendez struck him in the face with his elbow.

Mendez, according to the report, then picked up a machete and started to scream at the 24-year-old victim.

Mendez chased the man around and out of the house for several minutes, the report stated.

A neighbor, who called police, told investigators she heard a loud commotion and was “startled” to see the suspect chasing the other man with a “long-bladed object.”

When officers arrived, both men were inside the apartment.

They arrested Mendez on a charge of aggravated assault and took him to the Craighead County Detention Center to await a probable cause hearing.

Officers also found and logged the machete into evidence to be held for court.
