JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The condition has an impact on millions of Americans but National Diabetes Awareness Month gives the public an opportunity to learn more about the issue, officials said this week.
The work each day may involve checking your blood sugar, buying supplies and watching your diet. However, Joy Johnson of the Net Health Public Health District said a key part of the diet can be to reduce certain foods.
"It's not the end of the world, that there are really simple ways you can manage your diabetes and for people who maybe at-risk," Johnson said. "We really strengthen the importance of healthy lifestyle changes."
Johnson said as more organizations get involved with the issue, people are hopeful that the condition can be stopped.
