Jonesboro, AR--Ron Smiley Reports

Veterans Looking for Soldiers to Sign-Up

May 21, 2005--Posted 3:00 pm CDT

Jonesboro, AR--United States veterans barbecued on the streets of downtownJonesboro saturday, celebrating Armed Forces Day.  ‘Right now I’ve cooked up nearly two hundred burgers,’ volunteer cook Matt Butler said, “I’m not too sure how many I’m going to end up cooking.’

Veterans took the time to talk about a serious problem.  They told K8 News that many young veterans are deciding not to join organizations like the American Legion, and the ranks in these organizations are beginning to dwindle.

The problem is such a concern that the American Legion is offering free membership for a year for any veterans wanting to join.  They say they hope veterans will take them up on the offer and see what organizations set aside for soldiers can offer for the soldier and their family.
