JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A small church congregation with big hearts took on a task just in time for Thanksgiving.
"The biggest thing is, we knew the community was hurting," Pastor Rodney Rogers with Philadelphia Baptist Church said.
The Jonesboro church members filled 1,000 bags of groceries on Saturday to disperse to families in need.
"Each bag will feed a family of five," Rogers said.
Inside families will find a ham, green beans, a bible, and other holiday favorites.
"The phones have not stopped ringing with people sharing that they are desperate and in a needy situation," Rogers said. "You know, as the body of Christ, we are called to serve so that's what we are doing."
There were expected to be 800 people on the church's campus Saturday to receive the grocery bags.
The church plans to give leftover bags to local organizations such as food banks and food pantries.
Each person who walked through the door also had the opportunity to listen to a church sermon.
"We wanted to feed people physically but also invite them to one of our four services and feed them spiritually as well," Rogers said.
