RLINGTON, Texas – Three Lyon College women’s wrestlers competed at the Southwest Open on Saturday in the Mavericks Activity Center and came away with a combined 6-0 record and three first-place finishes.
Elissa Douglass posted an unblemished 2-0 mark in the 130-lb. weight class, while Alyssa Batiste won the 136-lb. class with a 3-0 record and Miyuki Pugrad captured the 143-lb. weight class with a huge win. All three athletes defeated NCAA Division I opponents.
ELISSA DOUGLASS – 1st (2-0)
Douglass opened action at the Southwest Open with a bye, and then advanced to the title round with a 10-0 technical fall win over Jianna Denizard from NCAA Division I University of North Texas. She claimed the title with a fall in 1:01 over Yaritza Arteaga of Richland.
ALYSSA BATISTE – 1st (3-0)
Batiste rolled to three consecutive technical fall victories to claim the title in the 136-lb. weight class. She defeated Avery Souders of NCAA Division I University of North Texas by technical fall, 12-1. Batiste then went on to knock off Malesa Williams of North Texas, 10-0, and then grabbed the championship with a 10-0 victory over Legacie Dominguez of Texas A&M.
MIYUKI PUGRAD – 1ST (1-0)
Pugrad only had to compete in one match to capture the title in the 143-lb. weight class. She defeated Mary Rupert of Texas A&M by fall in 1:31.
What’s Up Next for the Scots?
The Lyon women’s wrestling squad will not compete against Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.) on Monday due to a low number of competitors on both the women’s side. The Scots will take a break for Thanksgiving and then travel to Plainview, Texas, on December 3 to battle Wayland Baptist University in a dual.
