NEW ORLEANS, La. (11/22/2016) – Arkansas State senior guard Donte Thomas was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
A native of Washington, D.C., Thomas helped the Red Wolves to an impressive week that featured wins over Georgetown, Army and Chattanooga. In his return home against the Hoyas, Thomas had 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the 78-72 road win. He committed just two turnovers against the full court press the Hoyas ran most of the night.
Over the weekend at West Point, N.Y., Thomas guided his team to wins over Army (60-57) and Chattanooga (73-67) earning A-State the Maui Jim Maui Mainland Tournament championship. Thomas had nine points, three rebounds and six assists against Army. The next afternoon, Thomas posted his first double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 assists.
For the three games, Thomas averaged 13 points, four rebounds and seven assists. He was 46.7 percent (14-30) from the floor and 33.3 percent (1-3) beyond the arc. He was 7-for-9 at the charity stripe against Chattanooga and finished 10-for-15 (66.7 percent) in the three games.
A-State opens a three game home stand tonight at 7:30 p.m. The Red Wolves host SIU-Edwardsville today before playing Lehigh on Sunday (1:30 p.m.) and Cleveland State on Nov. 30 (7:00 p.m.)
