Sheriff warns residents of 'Facebook lottery' scam

DUNKLIN COUNTY, MO (KAIT) -

A southeast Missouri sheriff is warning residents about a scam with social media ties.

Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder states in a news release someone is contacting people telling them they've won a Facebook lottery.

The prize is worth $1 million, but the winner has to give the caller $1,500 for processing. Promising that a check will be sent, the caller asks the victim to open a bank account and send them $3,000 more.

Holder says this scam and others have been going on in his county.

He uses the old adage, "If sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

The sheriff urges residents to go to their local bank if they have questions about checks they may receive.
