Nearly $5,000 awarded to Jonesboro teachers

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Cheers of excitement could be heard throughout the Jonesboro Public School District Wednesday morning.

The Foundation for Jonesboro Public Schools presented nearly $5,000 to teachers across the district.

The grant committee accepts applications from teachers to receive the money.

Jill Ellis with the foundation said the money helps in many ways.

“Teachers can come up with innovative ideas and get funding from us when they don't have funding any place else,” Ellis said. “It just gives them that extra boost to do things in their classroom that are just great.”

A teacher at the Math and Science school plans to use the money for a new coding project.

At Annie Camp Junior High, a teacher will use her grant to incorporate basketball into math lessons.

The foundation holds various fundraisers to raise money for the grants.

Ellis said there are many ways people can help beyond donations.

“Anyone can purchase a brick by calling the central office, and we also have a brunch once a year that anyone can attend where we recognize distinguished people in the community,” Ellis said.

Checks were also presented at Jonesboro Kindergarten Center and Jonesboro High School.
