Man arrested after UPD finds brass knuckles in car

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - University police arrested a 38-year-old man Thursday morning after they found him toting brass knuckles instead of textbooks.

Arkansas State University police arrested Michael Edward Yates on suspicion of criminal use of prohibited weapons/brass knuckles, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving on suspended license.

Officer Micheal Yocum stopped Yates after he reportedly failed to use his turn signal exiting the Kum & Go parking lot on Johnson and Caraway.

Yocum pulled behind Edwards' vehicle and turned on his blue lights. He said in his report that Edwards continued onto Marion Berry Parkway before finally stopping at the Cameron Place apartments.

After learning that Edwards was driving on a suspended license, Yocum arrested him and placed him in the back of his patrol car.

A K9 search of Edwards' car, according to the initial incident report, turned up a plastic lock box containing a small glass pipe wrapped in a cloth. Yocum said residue inside the pipe tested positive for methamphetamine.

He also reported finding a set of brass knuckles with a fixed blade between the driver's seat and the center console.

Edwards is being held in the Craighead County Detention Center, awaiting a probable cause hearing.
