JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Central Baptist Word Campus, at 416 Calion Street, is partnering with different residents in the local community to help children enjoy Christmas.

Their mission is to make sure every foster child in Craighead County have a Merry Christmas.

Caleigh Romine, Word Campus Children's Ministry Director, said there are over 170 kids in the Arkansas foster care system who will have the opportunity to receive a Christmas through this program.

“When a child is taken into foster care, it can be for many reasons,” she said. “For neglect, abuse, and drug use in the home…so the child will be place into a foster home, a facility, or a shelter placement.”

Romine also said Word Campus likes to support the foster families, facilities and the children by reaching out to the community and gathering donors through the church.

Word Campus receives a list from the Department of Human Services of foster children and gifts that each child wishes to have for Christmas.
“This is Word Campus’s second year partnering with DHS to do it here at the church,” she said. “Jonesboro is great at reaching out and helping in all aspects with foster care.”

The church also partners with Arkansas State University's Master’s and Social Work Program.

One student from ASU’s program, Audra Pierce, bought Christmas gifts for a 14-year-old girl who wanted a hair straightener and a tablet.
“It was so much fun to be able to buy gifts for them,” she said. “Just being able to picture them opening it and the joy on their faces, because their able to have a Christmas I wanted to get everything for them.

At the end of the week, Word Campus church invites all foster families to come out and pick up their gifts for the children. The church will also provide a meal for them as well.
