JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

It's the most wonderful time of the year but it can also be one of the most dangerous times if you don't follow certain safety tips, police said Wednesday.

Big ticket items can be an inviting target for thieves while taking extended trips can give thieves a calling card.

Paul Holmes, Public Information Officer with Jonesboro police, said there are key things everyone should be doing to keep their family and home safe this Christmas.

"Certainly you want to give the appearance that the house is occupied, so you can pretty cheaply put a light on a timer, let your neighbors know that you're gone.  Don't post that information about the big holiday dream trip online," Holmes said.

Holmes also said those in the Jonesboro area can ask JPD to add extra patrols to their neighborhood if they are going away.

As for those staying home for the holidays, make sure your home is lit up and expensive items are out of site...

Holmes also added everyone should avoid putting old boxes for electronics or other expensive items out too far ahead of trash day, so potential thieves can't see what new and pricey items you may have in your home.
