Arkansas - As winter weather nears Region 8, you can expect to see snow plow vehicles on the road for future winter weather events.
One district prepares for the winter each year by using the federal surplus to purchase cheap, but newer and usable plows.
District 10 Engineer Brad Smithee said recently the district purchased eight new Freightliner Road Tractors for $6,750 each.
According to Smithee, one of the best reasons for them using the federal surplus program for equipment was for them to be able to put more trucks on the road at a cheaper price, rather than spending a huge sum of money on just one truck.
"We in District 10, for some number of years, have tried to take as much advantage as we can of some of the equipment that may be available, unorthodox as it may be at times," Smithee said.
Smithee also said three of the trucks can currently haul anti-icing agents, with one of the trucks being fitted for spraying abrasives and salts.
District 10 currently has 50 pieces of equipment fully outfitted with plows and spreaders, as well as 12 fully equipped belly plows ready to send across the state in case of any winter weather event.
