JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A Jonesboro man who told police he planned to celebrate his birthday by smoking 27 joints instead spent the night in jail.

Police arrested Leroy Jones, 27, early Tuesday morning on suspicion of possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance with the purpose to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, careless and prohibited driving, and fleeing.

Just after 2 a.m. officers attempted to stop him for a traffic violation on Calion Street. Instead of stopping, police said Jones hit the gas and tried to get away.

When it became apparent that he would not yield to the officer’s lights and sirens, police called off the chase but continued to follow Jones from a distance.

Jones turned onto Culberhouse, then stopped in the middle of the street and jumped out of the car, according to the initial incident report.

Police found him a short distance away, running down the railroad tracks.

Officers caught Jones and arrested him without incident. While searching his backpack, the report said they found an ounce of marijuana in a bag, along with two grinders, a set of scales, a box of clear plastic bags, 18 hand-rolled marijuana cigars, and two bags of suspected marijuana, weighing 57 grams.

“Jones stated that he was going to smoke 27 joints for his birthday,” Officer Trey Chism noted in his narrative.

Instead, Chism escorted Jones back to his patrol car and took him to the Craighead County Detention Center to await a probable cause hearing.
