BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) -

A lot of needy families in Independence County will have a better Christmas this year with help from an area native.

The Mark and Arlene Martin Foundation, Hope for Arkansas, Inc., presented a $10,000 check Thursday to the Arkansas Foodbank for Independence County families in need

Mark Martin, who grew up in Batesville and will be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in January, presented the check to provide 350 complete Christmas meal kits to families in Independence County.

Officials said Martin will help distribute some of the meals to about 75 families at Candy Cane Lane, a free craft event sponsored by the Batesville School District Parents as Teachers Program.

As part of the program, the food bank will distribute complete meal kits to families, which were assembled by volunteers from the community, and include everything from turkey, rolls, stuffing, cranberry sauce and vegetables so families can enjoy a traditional holiday meal together.
