Bill to prohibit student use of cell phones in school introduced

Rep. Kim Hendren Rep. Kim Hendren
LITTLE ROCK, AR (KAIT) -

A bill introduced this week in the Arkansas legislature would seek to ban students from using cell phones or other electronic devices in schools.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Kim Hendren, R-Gravette, is House Bill 1036. Under the bill, a cell phone, pager, beeper, portable game console, digital media player, digital camera, a digital video or audio recorder or a phone that allows students to text would be banned from school property during the school day.

However, a school district could allow the student to use a cell phone or device in case of an emergency. The bill would also create a designated area for students to leave their cell phones during the school day and the student would be able to pick up the phone at the end of the day.

The legislative session starts Jan. 9 in Little Rock.
