CROSS COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

A Cross County High School student is getting the opportunity to meet a congressman after he won the Congressional App Challenge.

Ryan Callicott is one of four in the state to win the challenge. He won for the First District of Arkansas.

Ryan created the app for his client, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, as a part of a computer class.

Ryan says his dad, who works for the highway department, inspired the creation.

"We were doing a couple of app challenges, and my dad had wanted one for the highway department," he said.  "It took us a while, but we finally figured out how to make it."

Ryan says the app took about two weeks to create.

The app is an asphalt calculator, and according to Ryan, it could help save the department's resources.

"It calculates how much asphalt you need to mix for a certain area," he said.

Ryan says he hopes to allow people to purchase the app eventually, but there are a few things he needs to work out.

He says he enjoys creating apps and does plan to do more for other clients if there is an opportunity.
