JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department spent Friday working to get roads ready for potential winter weather.
Crews were treating roads in Region 8 with a brine solution.
AHTD District Engineer, Brad Smithee said the solution was chosen over rock salt because roads are currently dry.
He said cars driving fast on the dry roads would blow rock salt off roadways and prevent treatment.
"It's salt dissolved in water is what brine is," Smithee said. "That will dry onto the pavement today, that solution actually crusts and forms a pretty good bond to the pavement."
Smithee also said the department avoids using the brine solution when heavy rains are in the forecast, but with the current forecast this was chosen as the best solution for now.
"As the forecast changes, if it rains heavily in the forecast or we feel like we need to apply material to areas other than just the bridges or raised elevations, we'll certainly come to work as well," Smithee said.
