JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - One Region 8 Veterans organization passed out Christmas baskets to veterans living in area nursing homes and assisted living facilities Saturday.

The group gave baskets to over 200 veterans in North East Arkansas.

The event is something Chapter 26 of the Disabled American Veterans does each Christmas but it would not be possible without the generosity of the community .

"Each year we ask for donations from the community and folks are very generous in helping us out, many food stores and grocers will donate fruit," said Chapter Adjutant, Richard Carvell. "Others will actually donate cash so that we can go and buy the additional fruit we need."

Carvell says the event is something the chapter continues doing for one important reason.

"You know for a lot of people it's the only Christmas they'll have, because many of them don't have family," said Carvell. "The D.A.V. chapter tries to identify all the veterans who are not going to be at home with their families on Christmas and make it special for them."
