BAY, AR (KAIT) - As the Bay Fire Department worked a house fire in below freezing temps Monday morning they struggled with frozen gear.

According to firefighter Paul Keith, the department deals with the issue whenever temperatures drop.

"Any time you get wind and fire, and freezing temperatures it makes it difficult all the way around for fighting a house fire," Keith said.   "It doesn't matter what the conditions are when you get the call you have to go."

Keith says after battling the fire they had to hang gear on fire trucks to thaw.

"There's not anything made in firefighting for cold weather, it's made to withstand heat, but not cold temperatures," said Keith.

Keith says many fire departments deal with this problem, but he is thankful they have a lot of extra gear on hand in these situations.

"We're lucky that we do have extra equipment, that if something else was to occur we have that stuff available," said Keith. "The big thing is the area departments for mutual aid."
