NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) -

More people have a job in Jackson County this Christmas than in previous years, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Talk Business and Politics reported that Jackson County’s unemployment rate dropped from 7.5% in January to 5.3% in October in 2016. At one time, Jackson County’s unemployment rate in 2011 was at 14%.

Jon Chadwell, executive director of the Newport Economic Development Commission, said the growth in Jackson County results from existing companies expanding their operations. He also credits the leadership in the county.

"Our jobs numbers have improved quite a bit in the last several years," Chadwell told Talk Business and Politics. "We have a cohesive leadership team at all levels of government and business in the area. It really helps."

Chadwell, who was hired by Newport more than a decade ago, said more people are traveling to Jackson County to do business than in year’s past.
