CLAY COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

One Region 8 town is hoping this will be the year they get new sewers, after nearly a decade of waiting.

Datto is a town with a population of 97, and according to Mayor Jeremy Edington, this is preventing them from getting a grant for the systems.

According to Edington, the city needs 100% funding to install the new system.

"We're having problems getting 100% grant," said Edington.  "We just can't seem to make that happen."

He says the grant would need to be for around $1 million, and this would cause problems considering the town's size.

"We don't have very many homes, so you can't get a loan and pay it back, your rates would be too high," said Edington.

He says the town currently has septic systems that cause trouble when it rains.

"We have a big drainage problem, and when water fills over a septic tank, you can't drain your washing machine, you can't take a bath or anything," said Edington.

He says despite the work he plans to continue efforts to get the grant.
