LITTLE ROCK, AR - Governor Huckabee today nominated Dr. Joe Thompson as chief health officer for Arkansas.  Thompson will have to be confirmed by the state Board of Health.

The health officer position is a new one.  Huckabee says Thompson will shape policy and develop strategies for improving the health of state residents.

Thompson lives in Little Rock and is a pediatrician.  He is also a faculty member of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Thompson helped develop the state plan for spending tobacco settlement revenues on health.
